Award-winning architect Kengo Kuma has unveiled the first themed rooms at Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa which pay homage to the brand new V&A Dundee.
The internationally-renowned designer of V&A Dundee was joined by project architect, Maurizio Mucciola of PiM.studio Architects, to take a look around the first two of five themed rooms at the hotel – which look on to the spectacular new attraction.
As well as offering views of the stunning building, which Kuma designed to reflect the rugged cliffs of Scotland’s east coast, each room features exclusive prints to mark the much-anticipated opening of V&A Dundee.
The first features prints of Kuma’s original sketches, while the second is adorned with framed posters marking V&A Dundee’s inaugural exhibition, ‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’.
Kengo Kuma said: “I am delighted to be in the city to see V&A Dundee in the days before it opens to the public, and to be alongside Maurizio, whose team has brought my vision to life.
“To see Apex paying homage to my work, and to the museum itself, is wonderful and I am honoured to be among the first to view these beautiful rooms featuring brand new artwork to mark the opening of V&A Dundee. I have stayed in these very rooms during my frequent visits to the city in the build-up to the museum’s launch and am proud my sketches have been selected to feature on the walls.
“Dundee is such a vibrant city, and it is wonderful to see residents, visitors and local businesses like Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa getting into the spirit of the launch of V&A Dundee.”
Ian Springford, Chairman of Apex Hotels, added: “It is always an honour to extend our signature warmer welcome to Mr Kuma, and it seemed fitting to mark the opening of the building he imagined by creating rooms paying tribute to the museum.
“We’re thrilled that Mr Kuma and Mr Mucciola are the first to see the themed rooms for themselves – and that they have both given their seal of approval.
“Our hotel is so close to the museum, and we have watched it come to life, so along with everyone else in the city we’re eager to see it open to the public on Saturday.”
As well as theming rooms around the new attraction, Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa is offering an exclusive V&A Dundee package, which starts at £95.95 and includes tickets to the inaugural exhibition. Guests will also be able to enjoy specially-created Victoria and Albert cocktails at the hotel’s bar for a limited time.
