Alongside the annual donation, Apex Hotels in Edinburgh will be setting up fundraising stations highlighting RZSS support for three critically endangered species and encouraging guests to contribute.
At Apex Grassmarket guests can learn about the RZSS WildGenes team who are unique among UK zoos and currently working with scientists in Cambodia to save the rare Siamese crocodile. The team have been developing a genetic test to identify individuals in mixed species leather farms that could be released as part of the species reintroduction program.
Apex City of Edinburgh will be spotlighting the famous ‘Highland Tiger,’ otherwise known as Scotland’s critically endangered wildcats. The RZSS-led Saving Wildcats partnership aims to prevent the extinction of the species in Scotland by breeding and releasing them into the wild, with the first releases planned for later this year.
Finally, Apex Waterloo Place fundraising station will feature conservation efforts for chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest in Uganda. The Budongo Conservation Field Station is core-funded by RZSS and combines cutting-edge research with practical action on the ground to study and protect a community of nearly 700 wild chimpanzees.
Rebecca Milne, Development Manager, Royal Zoological Society of Scotland said: “It is great to be working with Apex Hotels and we are thankful for their fundraising support which will help our charity to protect endangered species from the Highlands of Scotland to the rainforests of Uganda and wetlands of Cambodia.
“This is an exciting opportunity to raise awareness of our conservation projects in Scotland and around the world and inspire guests to protect, value and love nature. We are looking forward to working together over the coming year.”
Fraser Donnelly, Edinburgh Cluster Operations Manager said: “We are delighted to work with RZSS to support the charity’s vital conservation projects which protect some of the world’s most endangered species.
“As a hotel group we have a close affinity with animals through our unique collection of fibreglass mascots across many of our hotel lobbies, including the popular ‘True the Tiger’ located at Apex City of Edinburgh.
“As well as channelling funding through a corporate partnership package with RZSS, we hope to raise additional money throughout the year with the support and generosity of our guests. We look forward to working with the team at RZSS throughout 2023."
